friends of daley ranch
Mission
Support protection, maintenance, and restoration of the Daley Ranch Conservation
Bank native habitats and wildlife. Promote education about the biological and
historic value of Daley Ranch. Encourage responsible recreational use consistent
with conservation of native habitats and wildlife.
History
The Friends of Daley Ranch was formed as a private non-profit land conservancy
at about the same time the Daley Ranch easement was granted to the City of
Escondido (1997). It was anticipated that more land (eg Stanley Peak and properties
along the boundary with the county) would be needed to protect the resources
of the Ranch, and that appropriate management and use of the Ranch would be
assured if concerned citizens had a voice. The Friends of Daley Ranch was formed
to take on that role. The Trust for Public Land helped the city of Escondido
acquire Daley Ranch in 1997.
Who is involved?
Our board and membership are entirely volunteers from the region and the City
of Escondido. Our most visible activities and events support our mission statement.
(responsible recreational use, conservation of biological resources, and education).
Projects
We are supporting the Daley Ranch Tracking Team (training scholarships; 12
people in training); distributing literature promoting responsible biking (with
San Diego Mountain Biking Association; approximately 150 small posters published
and distributed to date); promoting an educational project (publishing trail
guide to native plants of Daley Ranch); collecting funds for development of
Nature Center at Ranch House; and holding regular meetings with City and County
elected officials, with wildlife agencies, and with other Friends and conservation
groups to encourage appropriate decision-making, and completion of the Multiple
Habitat Conservation Plan.
Goals
Our main goal is to ensure that a viable link between County wildlife corridors
and the Daley Ranch be assured in perpetuity. The Stanley Peak property is
the only as yet undeveloped piece of property on the Ranch boundary. As a result,
our goals include the acquisition or some other intervention to prevent development
of the Stanley Peak property. Our goals also include making certain that development
projects such as the Valley Center Road widening do not adversely affect wildlife
movement and that intense uses of the Ranch, such as by bicyclists and equestrians,
do not diminish its value as a preserve for the enjoyment of future generations.
Why we joined the Conservation Resources Network
Collaboration between all of the conservation resource organizations in San
Diego is beneficial for each organization. The whole is stronger than the sum
of its parts.
How are we unique?
The Daley Ranch provides a quiet respite from urban pressures for residents
of Escondido, Hidden Meadows, Valley Center, and Lake Wohlford. It also provides
a protected home for wildlife and animals, many of them endangered. Friends
of Daley Ranch is the only conservation protection and maintenance organization
devoted to the protection of the Ranch and to partnering with the City of Escondido
to help complete the Multiple Habitat Conservation Plan.
Wish List
We need to improve our relationship with the City. We need to attract more
volunteers.
