Buena Vista Audubon Society

Conservation through education, advocacy, and monitoring.

Mission

The BVAS Conservation Mission is to help educate BVAS members and the general public on important conservation issues, to influence public policy and programs in order to better protect the natural environment, and to actively support programs to protect, preserve, restore, and enhance natural ecosystems on a local, regional, national, and international level.

Quick Facts about the Nature Center and the Buena Vista Audubon Society

  • May 10, 1951 BVAS formed with official status as a chapter of National Audubon society
  • September 24, 1988 Nature Center opens
  • 75,000 Visitors welcomed in the first 15 years
  • 30,000 Students enjoy class and Nature Tour in the first 15 years
  • 3,000 Students now visit annually

Projects
BVAS has been active on a number of conservation issues over the last few months. This summer we will be acting as the lead agency on an application to get a comprehensive Buena Vista Creek Watershed Plan placed on the California Wetlands Recovery Group Work Plan, the first step on the road to funding this important planning project.

Lagoon Sewage Spill
"The recent Buena Vista Lagoon spill was a very serious and unfortunate event, but the cities of Carlsbad and Vista worked quickly to stop the spill, and to take remedial actions to minimize the impact on wildlife. Meanwhile, we are evaluating better methods for early prevention and detection of spills."
 -City of Carlsbad

Salton Sea Restoration
The Salton Sea is in serious trouble, and restoraton efforts must begin soon if we are to avoid exorbitant costs in terms of human health, ecological health, and depressed economic development.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Volunteers are the heart and soul of Buena Vista Audubon. If you can spare as little as an hour a month, you can contribute significantly to the success of our chapter's goals of education, conservation, and community outreach, and help keep Buena Vista Lagoon environmentally viable and a treasure our grandchildren can appreciate. No experience necessary!

Here is a list of the volunteer positions available at BVAS. If you are interested in any of them, contact:

Nature Center Host Responsibilities include greeting visitors, answering the phone, and Gift Shop sales. Training is provided. Shifts are available Tuesday thru Saturday, 10 am - 1 pm and 1 - 4 pm. Sign up for one shift a month, or as many as you like!

Nature Guides If you enjoy working with children, you will love this job! Volunteers provide basic tours about birds and the lagoon for elementary school classes and small community groups. Assistants as well as leaders are needed, and training is provided

Road Show "Tabling" Volunteer Assist with outreach and sales by manning a BVAS booth at special events such as the Carlsbad Village Faire, San Diego Bird Festival, Peppertree Days, and other area events. Only requires a few days each year.

Speakers Bureau Volunteers speak to groups (Lions, Rotary, etc) about Buena Vista Lagoon, Buena Vista Audubon Society, and the Nature Center.

Bird Counts Volunteer Volunteers participate in monthly and special bird counts, including Buena Vista Lagoon Count, Whelan Lake Count, and Christmas Bird Count. It's a chance to see lots of birds with experienced leaders, while at the same time making a contribution to science! No experience necessary.

Grounds/Trail Volunteer Assist with the maintenance of the Nature Center grounds and trail. Volunteers assist with the removal of invasive plants, removal of trash, plant watering, etc.

Fix-It Person for Nature Center If you are a talented do-it-yourselfer looking for more projects, there's always something to fix around the Nature Center!
